Job Summary
Title: Voicewriter ID: CON00006068
Description
Voicewriter
At Thomson Reuters, we deliver intelligent information quickly and efficiently, so professionals have knowledge to act. We combine industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial, legal, tax and accounting, intellectual property and scientific, healthcare, and media markets, powered by the world's most trusted news organization.
Scopists and voicewriters are used to produce transcripts utilizing speech recognition technology. All applicants should possess the following qualities: punctuality, responsibility, quick thinking, and attention to detail.
Voicewriter Particulars:
The core voicewriter job duty is to produce transcripts of financial earnings calls. A voicewriter works as a member of a two-person team and uses unique, proprietary techniques and software to produce transcripts that are extremely accurate and have a very fast turnaround time between the start of the call and the publishing of the transcript.
The voicewriter uses Dragon-based speech recognition to complete the first phase of transcription. While listening to a streaming Internet audio file, they will repeat every word they hear while adding punctuation. This text is streamed to the scopist, who edits the text further to produce the final version.
The voicewriter will also have other production-related job duties throughout the year, such as auditing other transcripts for accuracy.
Voicewriter Background: The ideal voicewriter has formal and informal understanding of the structure of the English language. They must have a good understanding of grammar and the relation between written and spoken speech, and be able to make distinctions and judgment calls on very quick notice. The voicewriter should ideally possess a B.A. in English or a related field (Print Journalism, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature). B.A.s in other humanities fields (Spanish, French, Sociology, History, etc.) are less preferable. Non-humanities degrees should only be considered if related work experience is extremely strong.
Qualifications
Qualifications lie in three areas:
The first is based on grammar and vocabulary, the second is based on vocal strength and endurance, and the third component to the job is technical and financial knowledge/experience. Candidates should be qualified in all three areas. The more qualifications in each area, the more qualified the candidate.
1) GRAMMAR/VOCABULARY: ? Newspaper/magazine journalism (writing/editing) ? Freelance writing/editing ? English composition teaching ? Proofreading ? Technical writing ? Foreign language written translation ? Court reporting
2) VOCAL STRENGTH/ENDURANCE: ? Extensive public speaking ? Singing ? Voice acting ? Voice mask court reporting ? Speech recognition experience ? Real-time foreign language translation/interpreting
3) TECHNICAL/FINANCIAL ? Knowledge of MS Office Suite (REQUIRED) ? Proven ability to quickly learn new software (REQUIRED) ? Understanding of financial terminology ? Experience in business/financial analysis or journalism ? Code programming
