Position Overview :

The chief correspondent will drive our coverage of the world's third-largest oil importer, top corn importer and major steel and aluminium producer. The tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan have thrown the energy policy of the world's third-largest economy into disarray and guiding, writing, reporting and editing on how Japan reconstructs its energy future is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Whatever Japan's decision on nuclear power, the successful candidate will ensure we cover the story faster and in more depth than our competitors. The same will be true of all major stories across Japan's commodity and energy sector. The successful candidate will be seasoned at breaking, reporting and editing big news stories and have some editorial management experience. We are looking for somebody with excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable working in the variety of teams, both real and virtual, local and regional, that intersect with the C&E team. The successful candidate will need to recognize and analyse trends before our competitors and make them common knowledge through our reporting. Some experience in long-form journalism would be an advantage as we will occasionally request more detailed insight into the bigger stories in the form of special reports. C&E markets, of course, are international- and domestic markets are part of that larger patchwork. The successful candidate must ensure the Japan file fits seamlessly into the regional and global C&E coverage.

Essential Responsibilities :

Management and leadership of the four person Tokyo commodities and energy team. Prioritising team efforts to maximise time spent on top stories and initiative work and to minimise time spent on routines. Provide strong editorial direction on coverage, advice on angles for stories, on additional reporting needs. Edit big stories, lead write or ghost write them as necessary. News plan in a meticulous fashion. Ensure that the team has the tools to meet its objectives: to be the fastest, most accurate and most in depth on coverage of all major C&E stories in Japan. Ensure reporters coordinate with regional colleagues so that trend stories are not limited to national boundaries, where relevant. Work in tight coordination with other team leaders on C&E in Asia and with C&E EIC and deputy EIC in Singapore. Make a first edit on stories where possible. Help ensure we tailor the Japan C&E file to meet client needs.

Qualifications

Degree-level education.

Required Skills and Experience :

At least three years experience covering energy and commodity markets, preferably in Japan. Track record of breaking, writing and coordinating coverage of big news stories. Two years experience manageing a team of journalists. Ability to write to cater to both the commodities and energy professional and a wide audience. Impeccable news judgement and editing skills. Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a diverse team and in a variety of teams.

Desired Skills and Experience :

Experience in long form journalism. Fluent Japanese.
